When it comes to a journey, the immediate start may be the most important thing. In mid-February 2023, K and I took a green train to Shanghai. Sure, the unfamiliar sights when we arrived were alluring, but what stuck with me most were the nights and mornings on the train. The window was a natural viewfinder, the world racing by in a blur of images, making me feel both excited and on edge. In the dead of night, under the harsh fluorescent lights of the hard-seat carriage, we snapped photos in the connecting spaces, trying to burn through the sleepless hours. The leaving, the moving—things that keep me going even now—it lasts.
